Budget Workshop-May 10, 2011

The Board of Trustees and the Mayor met for a Budget Workshop on Wednesday, May 10, 2011 at 1:30 P. M. in the Court/Conference at the Public Safety Facility, 609 St. Francis Drive, Tularosa, New Mexico.

Present: Mayor Ray S. Cordova

Trustee Joseph Lueras

Trustee Gloria Sainz

Absent: Trustee Patrick Garcia

Trustee Fred Tyler

Valarie Delgado presented a balanced budget to the board except for the Senior Center's budget that is short by $4,601.00

The Librarian, Randi Northrup, Ralph Otero Community Center, Vivian Lueras from the Courts, Tim Duran from the Utility Department and R. Ken Selman Chief of Police all came before the board asking for increases to their budgets. Prestina Chavez Senior Center Director explained that her she did not know where to come up with the extra money because there was no where else to cut and that her figure was $7,037.00

Police Chief Selman also made comment that an office clerk had recently been hired at $10.00 per hour while several of his certified dispatchers with three and four years experience were still under $10.00.

Discussion on cutting employees at the Senior Center in order to balance the budget ensued. The Board asked Village Clerk Dianna Brusuelas-Guilez what options they had. The response from both Village Clerk Dianna Brusuelas-Guilez and Valarie Delgado Finance Officer was cut staff or transfer the an additional $4,601.00 for a total transfer of $34,601.00. If they used the figures city hall staff used it would mean an additional $4,000.00 transfer rather than a $7,000 transfer, it was explained that it also meant less money in the General Fund to do projects within the village. Mayor Ray Cordova said he would call Ms. Chavez in to his office and discuss staff cutting of maybe the newest employee.

Ms. Delgado advised the Mayor and Board that decisions had to be made because the Interim Budget had to be approved at the May Regular Meeting and sent to the Department of Finance in Santa Fe by May 31st.

There being no further business to come before the Board the Budget Workshop adjourned.
